Every person experiences struggles in life—worry, failure, weakness, uncertainty, and the reality that life itself is beyond our control. We did not create the world, the air we breathe, or the life within us. In the same way, we do not create salvation.
The Bible teaches that salvation begins with grace and is received through faith. Together, grace and faith lead us into a living relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
Grace is God's undeserved favor toward sinners.
The New Testament word for grace is charis, meaning gift, favor, or blessing. Grace is not something we earn. It is something we receive.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
Grace means:
Salvation is God's gift from beginning to end.
The Bible teaches that God moves toward us before we move toward Him.
“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Before we sought Him, He sought us.
Before we loved Him, He loved us.
This truth is unexpected because human thinking naturally assumes we must first become worthy. Scripture teaches the opposite: God acts first in grace.
Grace is not merely an idea.
Grace is revealed in a person—Jesus Christ.
“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people.”
“The law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
Through Jesus:
Grace has a face—the face of Christ.
Faith is more than believing that God exists.
Faith is trusting God—trusting who He is, what He says, and what He promises.
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
Faith includes:
Faith is not trust in an idea.
Faith is trust in a Person.
Scripture teaches that even faith itself is connected to God's grace.
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.”
“For it has been granted to you... to believe in him.”
This does not mean our faith is unreal.
Rather, God awakens the heart so that genuine faith can respond.
A helpful picture is that of blind eyes being healed:
In the same way:
Human instinct says:
But the gospel says:
If Christianity were a human invention, we would expect a system based on achievement and performance.
Instead, Scripture repeatedly points away from human pride and toward God's initiative.
That unexpected message is one reason the gospel is so remarkable.
God ordinarily uses His Word to create and strengthen faith.
“Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
As we hear Scripture, learn about Christ, pray, and walk with God, faith grows stronger.
One of the clearest lessons in the Gospel of John is that faith is more than intellectual agreement.
Faith is relationship.
Faith begins with belief, but it grows into knowing God personally.
It becomes a life of:
True faith moves from simply knowing about God to truly knowing Him.
Grace is not only the beginning of salvation.
Grace also sustains believers every day.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
Grace strengthens us in weakness.
Grace comforts us in suffering.
Grace transforms us over time into the likeness of Christ.
A simple picture:
Grace is the source.
Faith is the means.
Christ is the Savior.
“We love because He first loved us.”
Everything begins with God's grace and leads us into a living relationship with Him through faith in Jesus Christ.
Grace is God's undeserved favor and saving action toward sinners, and faith is the God-given trust that receives Christ and grows into a living relationship with God.
Father,
Thank You for Your grace revealed through Jesus Christ. Open my heart to trust You, strengthen my faith, and help me walk with You each day. Teach me not only to believe in You, but to know You personally and grow in relationship with You through Your Son.
In the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen.
