John 1 NIV

Audio Listen

The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 He was with God in the beginning.

3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John.

7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.

8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.

11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—

13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ”)

16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.

17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah

19 Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.

20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”

21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”

He said, “I am not.”

“Are you the Prophet?”

He answered, “No.”

22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’ ”

24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent

25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

26 “I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know.

27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”

28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

John Testifies About Jesus

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’

31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”

32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.

33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’

34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”

John’s Disciples Follow Jesus

35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.

36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.

38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 “Come,”he replied, “and you will see.”

So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.

41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).

42 And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas”(which, when translated, is Peter).

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”

44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.

45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.

“Come and see,” said Philip.

47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”

48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”

50 Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”

51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.”

John 1 Summary

In the beginning, Jesus is introduced as “the Word,” who existed with God and was God. Through Him all things were created, and He became the source of life and light for humanity. His light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it.

John the Baptist was sent by God to prepare the way for Jesus. He was not the Light himself, but a witness who testified about the true Light coming into the world. His mission was to help people believe in Jesus.

Although Jesus came into the world He created, many people did not recognize or receive Him. Yet those who welcomed Him and believed in His name were given the right to become children of God. This new birth comes from God, not from human effort.

The chapter then declares that “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Jesus lived among people full of grace and truth, revealing God’s glory to humanity. John the Baptist testified that Jesus is greater than all and that grace and truth came through Him.

The final part of the chapter describes Jesus calling His first disciples, including Andrew, Peter, Philip, and Nathanael. As they encountered Jesus, they began to recognize who He truly was—the Son of God and the promised Messiah. Jesus also promised that they would witness even greater heavenly things in the future.

John 1 Verses

The Word Was God

🌿 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

This opening verse of Gospel of John reveals the eternal nature of Jesus Christ.

“The Word” refers to Jesus.
Before creation began, He already existed with God and was God.

The phrase:
“In the beginning”
echoes the opening of Genesis, connecting Jesus to the creation of the universe itself.

John teaches that Jesus was not merely created or born only in Bethlehem. He existed eternally before the world began and shared divine nature with the Father.

At the same time:
🌿 “the Word was with God”
shows relationship and distinction between the Father and the Son.

And:
🌿 “the Word was God”
declares the divinity of Christ.

This verse becomes the foundation for understanding who Jesus is:

  • eternal,
  • divine,
  • creator,
  • and revealer of God to humanity.

John 1:1 reminds us that Jesus Christ is the eternal Word of God, existing from the beginning and revealing God’s life and truth to the world.

Life and Light in Jesus

🌿 “In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.”

In this verse, Gospel of John teaches that true life comes from Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the source of life.
All creation, physical life, and spiritual life ultimately come through Him.

The verse also says that His life was “the light of all mankind.”
Light represents truth, holiness, wisdom, hope, and the presence of God.

Without light, people walk in darkness and cannot clearly see the way. In the same way, Jesus brings spiritual understanding and reveals the truth of God to humanity.

Through Jesus, people are invited out of spiritual darkness into life and truth.

This verse points not only to earthly existence, but also to eternal life and restored relationship with God through Christ.

John 1:4 reminds us that Jesus is both the giver of life and the light that guides humanity toward God.

“What Are You Seeking?”

Jesus turned and saw them following Him and asked,
🌿 “What are you seeking?”

In this moment, two disciples began following Jesus after hearing the testimony of John the Baptist.

Jesus responded with a personal question that reaches beyond simple curiosity.

🌿 “What are you seeking?”
is not only a question about location or information, but about the condition of the heart.

Jesus invites people to reflect on what they truly desire:

  • truth,
  • meaning,
  • peace,
  • purpose,
  • eternal life,
  • and relationship with God.

The disciples answered by asking where He was staying, and Jesus invited them,

🌿 “Come, and you will see.”

This shows that faith begins not only by hearing about Jesus, but by personally following and spending time with Him.

John 1:38 reminds us that Jesus invites every person to honestly seek Him and discover life, truth, and relationship with God through Him.

“Come and See”

Jesus said to them,
🌿 “Come, and you will see.”

After the disciples asked where He was staying, Jesus invited them to follow Him personally rather than simply giving information from a distance.

Faith begins with responding to the invitation of Jesus.
He calls people not only to know about Him, but to walk with Him and experience relationship with Him.

The disciples went with Jesus, stayed with Him, and spent time in His presence. This moment marks the beginning of deeper discipleship and personal connection.

“Come and see” also reflects the way God invites people into faith:

  • through seeking,
  • learning,
  • trusting,
  • and personally encountering Christ.

Jesus did not force belief. He invited people to follow, observe, and discover truth through relationship with Him.

John 1:39 reminds us that Jesus invites every person to come near, seek truth, and experience life with Him personally.

“Follow Me”

The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, He said to him,
🌿 “Follow Me.”

With these simple words, Jesus called Philip to become His disciple.

“Follow Me” is more than walking behind Jesus physically.
It is an invitation to trust Him, learn from Him, and live according to His truth.

Jesus often called ordinary people into extraordinary purpose.

Philip was not chosen because of power, status, or perfection, but because Jesus called him into relationship and discipleship.

This verse also shows that faith begins with responding to the voice of Christ.

Following Jesus involves leaving behind old ways of living and walking in a new direction guided by Him.

The call to follow Jesus continues for believers today:

  • to trust Him,
  • walk in faith,
  • seek truth,
  • and grow in relationship with God.

John 1:43 reminds us that Jesus personally calls people to follow Him and walk in the path of faith and truth.

Heaven Opened Through the Son of Man

Jesus said,
🌿 “Very truly I tell you, you will see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

In this verse, Jesus refers to the dream of Jacob in the Old Testament, where a ladder reached between heaven and earth with angels ascending and descending upon it.

Jesus reveals Himself as the true connection between heaven and earth.
Through Him, people are brought into relationship with God.

The title:
“Son of Man”
is one Jesus often used for Himself. It points both to His humanity and to His divine authority and mission.

The image of heaven opened shows access to God, revelation, and the presence of God being revealed through Christ.

Rather than a physical ladder, Jesus Himself becomes the way through which God reaches humanity and humanity comes to God.

This verse points forward to the greater works the disciples would witness through Jesus’ ministry, death, resurrection, and glory.

John 1:51 reminds us that Jesus Christ is the bridge between heaven and earth, revealing God’s presence, truth, and salvation to the world.
